Understanding HPV Vaccines

HPV vaccines are like shields against certain types of the human papillomavirus (HPV). These viruses can cause warts and different cancers, like cervical, anal, and throat cancers. There are different types of HPV vaccines available, each offering protection against specific HPV strains.

Available HPV Vaccines

1. Gardasil: Protects against HPV types 6, 11, 16, and 18. Suitable for males and females aged 9 to 26.

2. Gardasil 9: Protects against HPV types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58. Suitable for males and females aged 9 to 45.

3. Cervarix: Protects against HPV types 16 and 18, closely linked to cervical cancer. Suitable for females aged 9 to 25.

Who Should Get Vaccinated Against HPV?

Almost everyone can have the HPV vaccine, including breastfeeding women. However it is not suitable for pregnant women. It is best to get vaccinated before you have sex for the first time, as it means that you are protected before any exposure to HPV.

In Uganda, as indicated in the HPV schedule, girls of 10 and out of school should receive two doses of the HPV vaccine.

HPV Vaccine Schedule

- HPV vaccination typically involves two to three doses, depending on the vaccine type and age at vaccination initiation.

For the Vaccine available in Uganda, the first dose is given as soon as, she turns 10 years and the second dose, should be given six months after receiving the first dose.

Why Get Vaccinated?

- Prevents HPV lowers the risk of associated diseases, including warts, cervical and penile cancers

Understanding Hepatitis B Vaccination

Hepatitis B vaccination protects against the hepatitis B virus, which can cause liver disease and lead to liver cancer, and death. The vaccine stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies against the hepatitis B virus.

Who Should Get Vaccinated Against Hepatitis B?

- All individuals, regardless of age, gender, or sexual orientation, should get vaccinated against Hepatitis B to protect their liver health.

Hepatitis B Vaccine Schedule

- Hepatitis B vaccination typically involves three doses administered over a span of several months.

- The second dose is usually given 1 month after the first dose, and the third dose is given 6 months after the first dose.
